Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s interior minister, announced the proposal of a new law that aims to withdraw the residence permit to refugees who will not integrate in the society and do not learn the language. The same penalty will apply to immigrants who refuse job offers, and obstruct a successful integration of their families

The German state offers language classes, social benefits and housing to the more than one million refugees that have arrived since 2015. This is why officials want to see an effort by refugees in their integration, in order to earn an permanent residence permit after the first three years of arrival.

Issuing residence permits to refugees is within the plan. This policy’s main goal is to avoid the creation of ghettos or marginal areas usually settled by exiles.

The proposal has already been approved by the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the coalition partner of the government, and will be formally presented next May.
