Did you know that as a relative of an EU resident you can apply for a residency permit in Spain?
If the application requirements to the residence as a family member of a citizen of the European Union (EU) are met, it’s possible to apply for a residence card in Spain, which has a validity of 5 years. To qualify, it’s necessary to reside in Spain accompanied by the citizen of the Union, in addition to having resided in the country for more than 3 months.
Prior to the application for residence, the EU Citizen must be duly documented with the certificate of registration under the EU Citizens Regulation. In addition, it’s important that family members have medical insurance – public or private – that provides a level of coverage similar to the one offered by the National Health System.
In case of having private insurance, before signing the contract, it is vital to know the regime of deficiencies applicable by the insurance company.
It is also vital to establish the link between the family member and the citizen of the European Union and that the family relationship continues to be valid. This must be able to be documented if requested. The documentation proving the relationship can be: official birth certificate, official marriage certificate, adoption certificate, death certificate, divorce decree, to mention a few.
