Considerations for hiring foreigners in Israel
The recent regulations approved by the Israeli government for the hiring of foreign employees, which came into force in 2016, set certain considerations, which are mandatory for employers.
In the case of qualified professionals who do not require academic certification, the employer must:
- Pay in an Israeli bank, on behalf of the expatriate, double the average salary.
- The labor contract of the foreign worker performed in the country of origin must be validated by an Israeli lawyer, so that it certifies that Israeli labor laws are being complied with. This includes commitments made by the employer.
- In the event that the employer extends the work permit and the employee’s contract, copies of the electronic transfers issued to the foreign worker must be provided.
- The application for extension of the work permit must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the expiration date of the work visa.
- Once the employment contract is finalized, the foreign expert has a maximum of 30 days to leave Israel. In this period, the worker is not authorized to work.
- The foreign worker’s passport must be at least 1 year and 3 months valid from the start of the process. Previously the regulation demanded a validity of 2 years and 3 months.
The rest of the considerations required by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Israel with regard to the hiring of qualified foreign personnel will be included in the next alert.
