Residency and Self-Employment Authorization
The Authorization of residency and self-employment is a permit that can be applied by any non-EU citizen who wants to start his or her own business.
The application is made in person at the Spanish consulate in your country. Once approved, it is valid for one year with the possibility of renewal for four more years, if you meet all the requirements demanded in the initial application.
Self-employment permit or entrepreneur visa?
The residency and self-employment authorization is a visa with high requirements. The difference with the entrepreneur visa is that the self-employment permit is applied for in order to set up a regular business or company. It is not necessary that the business idea has a technological component, nor is it necessary that the business idea is innovative.
Requirements to apply for the residency and self-employment permit
It is essential that you can demonstrate that your academic and professional profile matches your business idea. That is to say, that you have sufficient training to carry it out.
As with the entrepreneur visa, to apply for the self-employment permit you must submit a detailed business plan that must be validated by one of the business associations such as, for example, the ATA (Association of Self-Employed Workers).
In the business plan you must include the characteristics of your product or service. In addition, you must specify who it is aimed at, the communication and marketing plan, the financing channels and the value it brings to the Spanish market.
Although there is no specific amount regulated by law, in the business plan you must demonstrate that you have sufficient financing to start up your project.
Although it will not be necessary to demonstrate that you have the economic means to sustain yourself during the process, you will need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to manage the larger expenses, for example, a business premises if your business requires it.
