How to apply for spanish authorization to stay for study purposes
The Authorization of stay for studies allows you to study a university degree, conduct research, obtain an intermediate degree or higher education in design, art, languages or sports.
You can apply for it at the Spanish consular office in your country of origin or directly in Spain.
In case you are already in Spain and want to apply, you must present it at the Government Delegation or Subdelegation of the Government of the city where you are going to carry out your studies. The student can do it personally, online or through a legal representative.
The most important thing is that you are in Spain legally, either because you have a tourist visa, a long-stay visa or a valid authorization to stay.
Keep in mind that the application for a stay for study purposes must be made at least 30 days before your permit expires. Otherwise the application will be automatically denied.
One of the most important requirements to apply for the study permit is the certificate of have been admitted to an educational or university center endorsed by the Ministry of Education.
To obtain the Authorization of stay for studies you must be enrolled in a public or private educational institution authorized at the state or autonomous community level with a complete and certified program of studies. It is wise to verify this before paying tuition fees.
How long does the Permit to stay for study purposes last?
In the case of higher education studies, the authorization will be valid for the duration of the academic program, with a maximum limit of two years.
In the case of other types of studies, the authorization will be valid for the duration of the academic program, with a maximum limit of one year.
Keep in mind that if your stay for studies is less than six months, you must provide the return tickets to your country of origin. We recommend that you do not pay for tickets until you are sure that your application has been accepted.
Do not forget that administrative silence means rejection of the application. In other words, if you do not receive any response from the administration, your application has not been accepted.
Requirements to apply for the authorization of stay for studies
- Not to be a citizen of the European Union.
- Not to have a criminal record. If the stay is longer than six months, you will be asked for a certificate from the authorities of your country.
- Demonstrate sufficient economic means to support yourself in Spain during your stay for studies.

- Valid passport. Our recommendation is that you verify that it is not about to expire while the application is being made.
- Form EX-00
- Proof of financial means
- Medical insurance with full coverage in Spain.
- Admission letter from the educational center for a complete program.
- For postgraduate studies you must provide the homologation of your university degree.
