Foreigners wishing to remain legally in Spain must file the NIE (Foreign Identity Card) with the competent authorities, which is indispensable for carrying out procedures such as: residence card or bank account opening, to mention only a few. The request of the NIE must be made at the Foreigners Office or at the police station that corresponds to the municipality in which they are going to reside. It can also be done through a duly accredited representative.

In order to request the Identification Number it is necessary to be in a regular situation in the country. It is advisable to process the NIE and submit the documentation that justifies the reason for the request, a few days after arriving in the country.
