Non-Lucrative Residence (NLV) or Non-Profit Residence Authorization
The Non-Lucrative Residence Authorization, commonly referred to as NLV or Non-Profit Residence Authorization, is a legal residency permit granted by the Spanish authorities to foreign nationals who can demonstrate that they possess sufficient financial means to support themselves and their dependent family members in Spain, without the need to engage in any work-related activities.
The initial Non-Lucrative Residence Authorization is granted for a period of one year. It may subsequently be renewed for two additional periods of two years each. Following the third renewal, the holder may apply for Long-Term Residence Authorization in Spain.
It is important to emphasize, that maintaining and renewing the Non-Lucrative Residence Authorization requires proof of continuous residence in Spain. Specifically, the applicant must not have spent more than six consecutive months outside the country.
Unlike other residency permits or investment-based visas, the Non-Lucrative Residence does not require a qualified investment in real estate or bank deposits.
Additionally, time spent residing in Spain under a Non-Lucrative Residence Authorization counts toward the residency period required to apply for Spanish nationality by residence.

Who grants the Non-Lucrative Visa?
The Non-Lucrative Residence Visa is processed and issued by the Consulate General of Spain with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence. Once in Spain, the corresponding Non-Lucrative Residence Authorization is granted by the Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjeria) in the province where the applicant intends to reside.
