Spain Temporarily Extends Internal Border Controls for Travellers from Italy
Spain has extended the temporary reintroduction of internal border controls for passengers arriving from Italy by air or sea.
This measure was published in the Spanish Official Gazette on September 5, 2026, and will be in effect from September 8 until September 22, 2026. It affects Spanish internal air and maritime borders in relation to passengers traveling from Italy.
This does not mean that the Schengen Area has been suspended or that travel between Italy and Spain is prohibited. However, travelers may be subject to additional checks upon arrival in Spain.
This means that companies, international assignees, business travelers, foreign employees, and families traveling from Italy to Spain should review their documentation before departure.
Travellers should ensure they carry valid identification documents, passports (where required), residence cards, visas, and any other documentation supporting their right to enter and stay in Spain.
Employers should take this into account when planning urgent business travel, onboarding, intra-European mobility, meetings, or project-related travel from Italy to Spain during this period.
These measures are temporary and subject to ongoing evaluation. According to the published order, the controls may be lifted before September 22, 2026, if the reasons justifying the measure disappear. Any further extension would require a new motivated decision.
Even short-term travel requires careful planning when border control measures are temporarily reintroduced.
